Sustainable Dining - 回收 and Composting

  1. Waste in landfill sites releases greenhouse gases and harmful chemicals - recycling reduces this pollution.
  2. Making products from raw materials requires much more energy than recycling. 回收 thus preserves natural resources and reduces our need for raw materials
  3. Landfill sites are filling up fast-- we can't afford excess waste!
  4. 回收 is a big business (In the U.S., is a $236 billion a year industry). 在 the country, 1.1 million workers are employed by over 56,000 recycling and reuse enterprises. (National 回收 Coalition)

Dining Services has recently moved to a Zero-Sort 回收 method.

In addition, the fryer oil used in the 食堂 and 水疗 is sold for reuse at .30/gallon - and is then converted to bio-diesel fuel.  Dining also has a full selection of compostable and eco-friendly paper products for our resident dining program, our disposable 餐饮 drop offs and our convenient retail grab and go items. We

Students living in the Northwoods Apartments and Sussman Village are piloting a new program of composting. The organic material when broken down will be utilized around campus and at the Skidmore Community Garden, which also supplies local food to Skidmore's 食堂.
